I've just started reading Volf's new book, Free of Charge. He's wrestling with the idea that God both gives grace freely (because its his essense to do so) and demands something in return (we are recipients and channels of grace).

He seems to be suggesting that the hope of grace, or the intent of grace is transformation. Consequently, anything less than the transformation of the recipient of grace, raises suspicion as to whether grace was truely received.

Thoughts?

Day Family said...

Its Monday morning. The day after a weekend of sharing some thoughts with our community about grace. Volf's book was a great assist in formulating my thoughts. I particularly was captured by his idea that grace first condemns us (names our sin), then immediately declares us freed from the debt we owe, and calls us toward transformation...to become a version of ourselves that is closer to what God has in his imagination for us. Easier said than lived out, for sure.

Any thoughts?
